“How to Best Grow & Show Iris”

 

Jerry Murphy will give a talk and slide presentation on iris color patterns, cultivation tips and common pests.  The talk will conclude with a demonstration of how to prepare iris stalks for presentation at our upcoming Judged Iris Show.

 

Jerry and his wife Ella, have been growing iris for nearly 30 years.  The Murphy's gardens consists of ~350 different named iris cultivars, including ~100 historic iris, and not including ~120 unnamed seedlings, along with a wide variety of other perennials.  They are both active in American Iris Society (AIS), Apprentice Garden Judges, and amateur iris hybridizers.  Additionally, Jerry is Database Chair for the Historic Iris Preservation Society (HIPS), and has been an instructor at the New York Botanical Garden (NYBG).  He is currently President of the Hudson Valley Iris & Daylily Society.
