“Rock Gardening”

Anne Spiegel will give a talk and slide presentation on the construction, design and care of rock gardens. She considers herself a dirt gardener (i.e., someone who does it herself). Anne is proud to be a self taught “dirt farmer” with a degrees in botany and agriculture from the school of trial and error! She is active in NARGS (North American Rock Garden Society), has taught at New York Botanical Garden, is a past president of Berkshire Chapter of NARGS, and has taught Master Gardener classes.

Presently, Anne is a horticultural judge at Philadelphia Flower Show, and ongoing builder and designer of her own rock garden. She grows her plants mainly from seed. Usual crop of seedlings about 2,000, many of which are eaten by deer. Anne’s gardens are a labor of love, built into a spectacular rock ledge. She is a member of the Garden Conservancy, an usually opens her gardens for a tour each Spring to benefit that organization. This year, her gardens at 299 Maloney Road, Wappingers Falls, will be open on Sunday, May 15.  There is a nominal charge of $5.00 to benefit the restoration and preservation work of the Garden Conservancy.  The following is a excerpt from their Open Gardens Book:

The Garden of Anne Spiegel is a dramatic rock garden planted on a series of stepped ledges and cliff. The site is open, windy, and sunny, and includes plants from Turkey, the Great Basin, and the western United States in various screes, sand beds, lime beds, and trough gardens.
